Hi, I'm Mhairi ("Vari").

I help healthcare professionals understand cancer biology, communicate complex concepts with patients, and engage patients with positive lifestyle changes to reduce secondary cancer risk.

Dr Mhairi ("Vari") Morris

I’m a Biochemistry lecturer and cancer researcher at a UK university and I love teaching. I’m a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and I was also awarded local Teacher Fellow status at my previous institution.

I created Essential Cancer Education because of my geeky obsession with cancer biology! But more seriously, because I wanted to do something that would make a difference to patients' lives - albeit indirectly.

Making cancer science accessible

As an academic, though, one of my biggest frustrations is around clear communication in science education. I’m not your typical academic, you see, and I’m not afraid to admit that I too get bored when reading some textbooks and journal articles. Sometimes they can be so stuffy!

A couple of years ago, I had the pleasure and honor of working with a group of teenage and young adult cancer patients as part of a research project I’m involved with. We were exploring ways that a personalized 3D printed model of a patient’s tumor could help them come to terms with their diagnosis.

It was during this time in my life that I began to explore the idea of communicating cancer clearly and I’ve become passionate about explaining complex cancer science in easy-to-understand, accessible language – and so Essential Cancer Education was born.

My aim with Essential Cancer Education is to help cancer healthcare professionals provide valuable, evidence-based learning packages to equip their patients and clients with a complete understanding of their diagnosis, so they feel empowered to make informed decisions about their cancer care options.

Demystifying Cancer Biology

What cancer actually is and the science behind its 'success'

If you haven't already, make sure you sign up for your FREE copy of my eBook, "Demystifying Cancer Biology" - an accessible version of Hanahan & Weinberg's seminal article on the topic, written in easy-to-understand language using everyday metaphors and analogies.

My students rave about this, saying it helps them to understand what would otherwise be a very complex topic.
